This is a sculpture called “Parabolic Frequency Conversion with Perimeter Fortification”, it was installed at the Smack Mellon Gallery in October of 2004. It consists of a large wall painting, a fur & velvet kneeling rug, a disemboweled radio feeding a large aluminum parabolic reflector, a small drainage ditch/culvert/waterfall fountain, 4 Butt-Kicker low frequency speakers with accompanying amplifiers, and a microphone.

What is does is delineate/protect a space to foster an understanding of the everyday intersections of Science & Theology. The parts work together to form a complete group that mirrors society and its basic needs.

Forming the perimeter is the invisible wall made by the infrasonic frequencies resonating from the four Butt-Kicker speakers mounted on concrete pilings. The ultra low frequencies that become this line of defense are made by the waterfall action of the drainage ditch, waterfalls being one of the few natural phenomena that produces infrasonic vibrations. Taking up a position on this line is a warning beacon which flashes the image of an agitated pigeon when the waterfall system is in operation. The pigeon is used as a sort of "infrasonic canary in the coalmine" due to its keen sense if infrasonic vibrations which extend all the way down to .5 Hertz. When the fence is down the pigeon is depicted in a relaxed state.

In the center and up the wall is the cathedral. The goat skin rug with the kneeling pad is under a large parabolic reflector. When kneeling on the rug you are in the sharp focus of sound that is created by the reflector and its accompanying radio. The sound is that of a spanish pop station. What is important about the sound is not the actual sounds, music, dj banter, etc..., but the method of delivery- the parabolic. Although it is important that the sound is one that represents the community, it's the shape and definition of the parabolic that give relevance. You see, in trying to uncover parallels in the understandings and laws of science and religion/faith, I happend upon the definition of parabolic which was seperated into two parts of disparate origin. One states parabolic as a reference to the shape as it exists in nature and the world of science, that of a parabaloid or spheroid, while the other definition refers to parabolic as those lessons given in the parables of Jesus, the foundation of all that is considered moral and positive in Christian mythology. So like the Sunday choir, the message is the voice of the community, that of the spanish pop music. But, unlike the choir, what's important is not words praise that are being heard, it's how we're hearing it that gives it it's meaning- That this parabola functions as not only an example of a scientific "miracle" but also a representation of the the devine teachings of one of the most popular figures in religion today.
The wall painting is that of two crossing signals radiating from points at either edge of the wall. These images of sound wave patterns criss-cross to form spires like those found in the great cathedrals of the world.
